Stem Cells From Hair Follicles May Help ‘Grow’ New Blood Vessels
–Stem cells have been in the news a great deal lately and it’s because they can replace dead or damaged cells in a huge variety of locations in the human body. They can become almost any type of tissue in the body(with a few exceptions). New sources of stem cells that are easily obtained will be quite valuable in the future in treating many diseases. Hair follicles contain some of the desirable stem cells and researchers from The Univ. of Buffalo Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering have shown that it may be possible to grow new blood vessels from the hair follicle stem cells. Thes would potentially be used in treating heart disease, burn patients and other places where new blood vessels may be needed.
