Quadruplets With Three of Them Identical Are Born
In Towson Md, a mother has given birth to a very rare set of quadruplets in which three of the four boys are identical. The babys were born 11 weeks premature in January at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in. The parents will speak to the press about their boys at a news conference Friday. The frequency of regular quadruplets is one in 512,000 pregnacies. The number of high order multiple births has risen over the twenty years, due in large measure to newer medical and surgical fertility treatments that raise the chances of this occurrence dramatically. As many as 35% of pregnancies that use fertility treatments such as In Vitro Fertilization involve more than one child. Infants born from multiple birth pregnancies have a much greater chance to be born prematurely compared to those from single pregnancies.
There are fewer than 100 documented cases of “identical triplets plus one” in the United States, hospital officials said.
Two embryos were placed into the womb of the mother. One embryo split, then split again, creating the identical triplets, hospital spokesman Michael Schwartzberg said.
The four boys were delivered by C-section on Jan. 29, which was their mom’s 32nd birthday. Joshua Drew was born first, then Gavin Michael, Cody Benjamin and finally Logan Christopher, the non-identical one, Schwartzberg said.
The babies were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, and all four have been sent home for about 2 1/2 weeks, Michael Schwartzberg said.
